Sling Basics

One of the biggest keys to successfully wearing and using your sling is proper positioning of the
sling. You want the rings at about shoulder level with the tail hanging down in front. Most people
wear the rings on whichever side they write with because this makes it much easier to adjust the sling.

Next you want to make sure the fabric is spread smoothly across your back with no twists or bunching.
The more spread out the fabric is, the more comfortable the sling will be.

Next, make sure the fabric is correctly positioned on your shoulder. Rather than resting the fabric on top
of your shoulder as in this picture:

You want to spread the fabric around your shoulder to create a cap, as in this picture:

Getting the rings adjusted properly takes some practice. When your child is secured in the sling, the rings
should end up around the spot where you would pin a corsage, about 6-8 inches or so on the diagonal
from your shoulder. Thus, you'll want to put the sling on so that the rings start out high and thus give you
some adjustment room to make sure they end up in the right spot.

To tighten the sling, gently pull the tail on the diagonal at which it lies rather than straight down. To
loosen the sling, lift up the top ring and tug gently upwards towards your shoulder.

Make sure that you are always supporting your child with one arm while you use the other to adjust the
sling.
